antes que seja tarde                                         15 min.

(Before It's Too Late)

directed by Leandro Goddinho

Brazil, just after the election of ultra-fascist Jair Bolsonaro to the Presidency. A couple of local music stars hear news of their deaths on the air, and they see the writing on the wall....

NOW, IF WE COULD ONLY REMEMBER THE QUESTION.  Sometimes, it really is amazing how many situations arise for which "Love" actually is the answer.  These films suggest the array: from an aspiring filmmaker whose life revolves around... well, himself, to a man who waits unconscionably long to propose to his life partner, from a pair of "sweethearts" who finally realize a shared ambition to a restaurant worker with an impossible crush to a man's improbable new life partner. And a whole bunch of recognizable (well, at least in most cases) situations in between.

lesson #8                                                                5 min.

directed by Alberto Ferreras

Yes it matters what you say in your "bio" if you use the hookup sites all over the internet. This film shows a few reasons why.

ROY LIEBMAN is a film historian who is now working on his seventh book, a bio-bibliography of the famous 1920's to 1970's comedy team the Ritz Brothers. Among his previous books are a guide for researchers in silent film history; a comprehensive catalog of the Vitaphone films ( the first commercially viable sound films); a history of the pioneering Wampas Baby Stars, and a monograph on musical groups in the movies.  His most recent published book spotlighted Broadway actors who went into films from 1894 to the present. He has written and produced two documentaries, the latest one on Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, and has been interviewed for three others, the most recent being Hollywood Singing and Dancing, the 1920's. He has written well over 100 articles for film-related reference books and periodicals, as well as hundreds of book reviews for various print and online review sites. He is currently serving as a programmer for the Outfest film festival, one of the largest LGBTQ festivals in the world. On commission from the Los Angeles Unified School District, he wrote a series of one-act plays which were performed at schools throughout the District.

WHO'S ON TOP? What's the position? I dunno my status.  No, it's not the old Abbott and Costello routine, it's the theme for our third film program.  These issues come up again and again, especially during the "early" phases of possible relationships. And to think it all used to be soooo simple.  Was it really? Or is that just how we remember it?

FOR SO MANY WHO ARE LGBTQ, "FAMILY" is a matter of choice. Who we spend the holidays with; the folks we know we can depend on even when there's no one else... all that good stuff.  But chosen or natural, there's no denying the importance of family in our lives. In this program, that includes a lot of "family" ties that aren't immediately obvious, including even the family pet.

We guarantee, nothing like this EVER happened in any of the "Walking Dead" shows or spinoffs.

Now in its eighth year, the CMG Short Film Festival presents four programs of LGBTQ short films representing the very best of our vast and diverse community’s filmic offerings.  Besides attending the larger festivals and personal referrals, we winnow through hundreds of films submitted through the Film Freeway submission platform, to come up with the less than 40 films that comprise our programs.

To promote community, the CMG Short Film Festival likes to give an edge in the selection process to local filmmakers and talent.  Being local doesn’t guarantee acceptance, of course, but we very much like the idea of creating a “family” of local artists who know and support each other.  For some, ours will be the only LGBTQ film festival their film will appear in locally, and we recognize and welcome the unique responsibility this imposes on us. To keep faith with this community, we have a generous comp policy for filmmakers, cast and crew.

We are proud to offer “grass roots” submission pricing, to encourage submissions from less well-financed filmmakers.  Thanks to Film Freeway, we can afford to do this.  For those who might want to avoid any submission fee altogether, please be mindful that this festival is an all proceeds benefit for AIDS Walk Los Angeles, as it has been since its inception.  We appreciate the difficulty of budgeting submission fees alongside all the other costs, but our festival also has unavoidable expenses.  Submit early, get the dirt-cheap price, and pat yourself on the back for contributing to a good cause.

As it has been since its inception, CMG Short Film Festival is an ALL-PROCEEDS BENEFIT for AIDS Walk Los Angeles.  We do not pay anyone a salary, not even our egregiously overworked Festival Director, Jim Hoffman.  We welcome both cash sponsors and in-kind sponsors who can help us defray costs.  For several years running, we have been able to pay all costs of the festival from submission fees and sponsorships, which means that all ticket sales go entirely to the AIDS Walk.

CMG (California Men's Gatherings) is a learning organization for men, most of whom are gay or bisexual. We explore what it means to be a man and what it means to be gay or bisexual in a world that has often been unaccepting.  Our Mission Statement:  California Men's Gatherings (CMG) fosters a safe, supportive, welcoming community where men challenge themselves to develop their emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual and physical lives - with as much fun as possible along the way!

Finally, we are grateful to the City of West Hollywood for providing the beautiful Council Chambers auditorium for our screenings.  In response to requests from our filmmakers, we have independently enhanced the sound system to offer stereo sound. The City also graciously provides FREE PARKING for all Festival patrons and guests.
