STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Now in its eighth year, the CMG Short Film Festival presents four programs of LGBTQ short films representing the very best of our vast and diverse community’s filmic offerings. Besides attending the larger festivals and personal referrals, we winnow through hundreds of films submitted through the Film Freeway submission platform, to come up with the less than 40 films that comprise our programs.
To promote community, the CMG Short Film Festival likes to give an edge in the selection process to local filmmakers and talent. Being local doesn’t guarantee acceptance, of course, but we very much like the idea of creating a “family” of local artists who know and support each other. For some, ours will be the only LGBTQ film festival their film will appear in locally, and we recognize and welcome the unique responsibility this imposes on us. To keep faith with this community, we have a generous comp policy for filmmakers, cast and crew.
We are proud to offer “grass roots” submission pricing, to encourage submissions from less well-financed filmmakers. Thanks to Film Freeway, we can afford to do this. For those who might want to avoid any submission fee altogether, please be mindful that this festival is an all proceeds benefit for AIDS Walk Los Angeles, as it has been since its inception. We appreciate the difficulty of budgeting submission fees alongside all the other costs, but our festival also has unavoidable expenses. Submit early, get the dirt-cheap price, and pat yourself on the back for contributing to a good cause.
NOTE: Last year, our sponsor GYM SPORTSBAR generously provided a CLOSING NIGHT PARTY immediately after the last program on Sunday, at which we presented (for the second time ever) a FIFTH program of films. These films were not in competition for our jury or audience awards, and our selection criteria were modified to create a program of films that would play well in a bar. Thus, acceptance by CMG Short Film Festival is NOT a guarantee that your film will be "in competition," but we do endeavor at all times to give every film an appreciative audience. We hope to present a Closing Night Party again this year, and will announce the venue as soon as we have completed negotiations with a sponsoring bar.
We consider trailers for feature films to be a form of short film in themselves. We encourage feature filmmakers to submit their trailers for films that are new this year, for possible selection. It’s not solely to encourage attendance at the films themselves; it’s also to admire their trailers as examples of an art form, one whose rules differ from the principles that make a film great. NEW THIS YEAR: We have priced the submission fee for trailers at a lower-than-dirt cheap $2.00 per submission.
As it has been since its inception, CMG Short Film Festival is an ALL-PROCEEDS BENEFIT for AIDS Walk Los Angeles. We do not pay anyone a salary, not even our egregiously overworked Festival Director, Jim Hoffman. We welcome both cash sponsors and in-kind sponsors who can help us defray costs. For several years running, we have been able to pay all costs of the festival from submission fees and sponsorships, which means that all ticket sales go entirely to the AIDS Walk.
CMG (California Men's Gatherings) is a learning organization for men, most of whom are gay or bisexual. We explore what it means to be a man and what it means to be gay or bisexual in a world that has often been unaccepting. Our Mission Statement: California Men's Gatherings (CMG) fosters a safe, supportive, welcoming community where men challenge themselves to develop their emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual and physical lives - with as much fun as possible along the way!
Finally, we are grateful to the City of West Hollywood for providing the beautiful Council Chambers auditorium for our screenings. In response to requests from our filmmakers, we have independently enhanced the sound system to offer stereo sound. The City also graciously provides FREE PARKING for all Festival patrons and guests.
This program is presented with the support of the City of West Hollywood's WeHo Arts program.

Submissions for the 2019 CMG Short Film Festival are now CLOSED. We are making our selections and all filmmakers will be notified via Film Freeway by the promised Notification Date. Thanks to ALL FILMMAKERS who submitted work this year. For info regarding the 2020 Festival, see below.
Entry Requirements: Films must be under 30 minutes. Trailers must be under three minutes. Webisodes may contain more than one "chapter" but must total less than 30 minutes. We seek material that will be of interest to LGBTQ audiences and others interested in LGBTQ issues. As an ALL-PROCEEDS BENEFIT for AIDS Walk Los Angeles, we also welcome submissions relating to the ongoing HIV crisis.
Films Must Not Be Available On Line. If your film is already available for free, that makes it very difficult for us to ask people to pay for tickets. Exceptions may be made, but very rarely. Webisodes, by definition, are available on line, or may be by the time we screen them. Preference is given to Webisode submissions that will be a premiere when shown at our festival or are otherwise unique, e.g., a re-edited whole season run together as one continuous story.
